Why keeping Queenslanders and other Aussie homes warm in winter is vital for good health

Many Australians are shivering through each winter unaware of the impacts cold homes have on their health.

From Queenslanders on stilts, often described as wooden tents, to draughty cottages in the southern states, there are many different reasons houses in the country are not keeping out the chill, according to the University of Adelaide's Lyrian Daniel.

A researcher at the university's Centre for Housing, Urban and Regional Planning, Dr Daniel said Australians saw themselves as a summer country.

"We're so geared towards thinking about summer and heatwaves that really we almost forget about winter," she said.

Brisbane City Council announces details of Pallara's new bus route, stop locations

Calamvale Ward councillor Angela Owen has confirmed the locations of six new, permanent bus stops to be built in Pallara by December.

The announcement came after Brisbane City Council and Queensland's Transport Department came to an agreement over the installation of a new bus route.

Current route 126 (Sunnybank to Acacia Ridge) will be realigned and extended to run along Mains Road and also south to Ritchie Road, providing Pallara residents a bus route to Sunnybank Plaza and CBD connections, or further south to Heathwood.

The timeline for its installation had been uncertain because the council wanted to install temporary bus shelters to hurry the project along, while TMR required at least six disability-compliant, permanent bus stops be installed before the route began.

Queensland braces for severe weather as storms, flash flooding and record-breaking rain set to hit parts of state

A man in his early 20s is "lucky to be alive" after police and firies rescued him from a flooded causeway in Mount Isa overnight.

Parts of central and inland Queensland are set for a drenching today as an extreme weather system sweeps across the state, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) says.

The man entered the flooded Alma Street causeway at 11pm last night, and was swept 500 metres downstream of the Leichhardt River, clinging to reeds along the river for 30 minutes.

Queensland police Inspector Erin Shawcross said the man was "extremely lucky to survive".

Brisbane flood review labels event 'worst-case scenario', emergency alert system to be upgraded

An independent review into the flood event that hit Brisbane earlier this year found it was a "worst-case scenario" and the response time to the emergency was slow.

Former governor and supreme court chief justice Paul de Jersey headed the review which was initiated in an effort to better prepare Brisbane for future flooding events.

"I've reached the view that this was a worst-case scenario for Brisbane and its people," Mr de Jersey said.

Queensland Museum gifted tea cloth signed by prominent federal, state politicians

A tea cloth embroidered with the signatures of more than 60 politicians from the early 1900s has prompted a nationwide search for the people and history behind the names.

Complete with mended holes and small kitchen stains, historians believe the 113-year-old linen tea cloth shows the names of both federal and state members stitched around the signature of former Labor prime minister Andrew Fisher.

The years "1909" and "1915" have been embroidered on either side – the years Mr Fisher was in government.

Queensland Museum curator Judith Hickson hopes the public can help them unearth the stories behind the tea cloth puzzle, especially four signatures on the towel yet to be identified.
